Project Description
Project Title: Dark Energy Survey (DES) @ The DES consortium, with cornerstone members Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO), and National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), together with many U.S. and international universities and research institutions, including DES-Brazil: The main objective of the Dark Energy Survey (http://www.darkenergysurvey.org) is to study the nature of the dark energy, a recently discovered component of the universe that we now understand to represent more than 70% of the mass-energy content and to be responsible for the acceleration of its expansion.
Collaborators: The DES is a joint DOE/NSF project. The DES consortium consists of four major DOE laboratories (Fermilab, SLAC, Argonne, and LBL), two major NSF centers (NCSA, NOAO), five U.S. universities, and three international “collaborations” (Spain, U.K., and Brazil).
AmLight Requirements: DES operations: Daily large file transfer at speeds between 100Mbps and 1 Gbps, in order to transfer nightly data stream (approximately 700GB per night) from CTIO in northern Chile to NCSA. Complete transfer must be done in much less than 18 hours to allow for processing of the data at NCSA in time to guide the next night’s observations. Additional command and control data streams (including bi-directional database updates, video conferencing, etc.) are also critical to the success of the project.
