AmLight-ExP moving towards the Autonomic Network Architecture (ANA)

March 18, 2022

The new NSF IRNC AmLight Express and Protect project will redesign how traffic engineering and packet drop mitigation happen at AmLight. By leveraging network telemetry from both packet and optical layers and a perfSonar mesh, the SDN framework will shift towards the Autonomic Network Architecture (ANA) specification, focusing on the ANA’s self-optimization discipline to better support SLA-driven real-time applications. For more details please see the talk presented at the ESnet CI Lunch & Learn series about what has been achieved so far and the technologies AmLight will be leveraging in the future … See recording

AmLight-ExP announces the release of the Kytos-ng SDN Platform version 2022.1

February 2022

The AmLight Express and Protect (AmLight-ExP) project is excited to announce the release 2022.1 of the Kytos-ng SDN Platform. Kytos-ng provides a fast and simple way to deploy an SDN network. Kytos-ng was designed to be easy to install, use, develop and share Network Applications (NApps). Its modular design makes Kytos-ng a lightweight SDN platform. AmLight-ExP has enhanced the Kytos-ng SDN Platform by adding NApps to support the Point-to-Point Ethernet virtual circuits (E-Line), In-band Network Telemetry (INT) for real-time network telemetry reporting, Bi-directional Forwarding Detection (BFD) and other network applications … Read More

How AmLight is using In-band Network Telemetry (INT) in production and next steps

February 25, 2022

At the CI Eng Lunch & Learn series talks,  Jeronimo Bezerra presented how AmLight is using INT in production and the next steps. In 2019, AmLight introduced its NSF award called AmLight-INT and the first results of the collaboration with NoviFlow to deploy In-band Network Telemetry on the AmLight SDN switches. In 2021, after two years of developing the INT ecosystem, the team presented the results and lessons learned. Currently, INT is in production at AmLight, and INT is already changing network troubleshooting … See recording

South American – African Astronomy Coordination Committee (SA3CC) Meeting 2022

The next AMLIGHT SA3CC virtual meeting will be hosted by Florida International University on April 19-202022. The SA3CC is a standing committee that was established in conjunction with the AmLight network – a project sponsored by the NSF International Research Network Connections (IRNC) program. SA3CC is comprised of representatives from the various astronomy projects operating observatories in South America, and network operators of the research and education networks in South America and Africa. The goals of the SA3CC are to provide input and advice to the AmLight Principal Investigator on program and network activities and to serve as a venue for coordinating the network needs of astronomy projects and institutions … Register here

FLR Among the ‘First to 400G’ on Internet2’s Network

February 2022

Internet2 recently unveiled its fifth-generation backbone, known as the Next Generation Infrastructure (NGI). NGI interconnects with 37 state and regional networks and serves every state in the U.S. Among these 37 are the first five to upgrade to 400 gigabits per second connectivity: Florida LambdaRail, Indiana GigaPOP, Mid-Atlantic Crossroads, Ohio Academic Resources Network, and Utah Education and Telehealth Network. In this “First to 400G” blog series, we spotlight each of these networks and how NGI’s new capabilities and capacity meet the needs of the broader research and education communities … Read More

An optical cable is laid in the bed of the Amazon River

January 2022

In 2012, a project that came out of the university gained notoriety by the Brazilian academic network, RNP, by proposing the construction of a mesh of submerged optical cables, to be installed in river beds, with technology similar to that of submarine cables. Ten years later, in January 2022, Infovia 00 was completed, with 705 km of optical cable laid in the bed of the Amazon River, passing through five cities that together have a population of 1 million inhabitants … Read More
