AmLight Cyberinfrastructure highlighted at NSF 2024 Research Infrastructure Workshop

March 26-29, 2024

AmLight Cyberinfrastructure was highlighted at the NSF 2024 Research Infrastructure Workshop in Tucson, AZ, from March 26 – 29, 2024. The workshop aimed to support NSF’s mission by providing a collaborative forum for all its Research Infrastructure Projects. Attendees exchanged best practices, discussed new initiatives, and expanded their community of practice. Dr. Julio Ibarra presented a poster on the topic of R&E networks supporting Major Facilities. The poster featured the Global Research and Education Network (GREN), and the regions that have NRENs. The AmLight Express and Protect (AmLight-ExP) was represented along with quantitative information of its characteristics and the communities of interest it supports. The Vera Rubin Observatory network was highlighted, along with a description of its use case for its Long Haul Network … Read More

Rubin’s 8.4-meter Mirror Moves into the Observatory

March 7, 2024

The Rubin Observatory’s primary/tertiary mirror was successfully relocated from a storage facility into the observatory on March 7, 2024. This marked the mirror’s first placement on the maintenance floor within the observatory, where it will remain for the duration of construction and the ten-year survey period. Previously stored in a separate building since its arrival on Cerro Pachón in May 2019, the mirror, still in its glass blank form, was carefully transported to its new location on a specialized truck, covering a short but crucial distance of approximately 600 meters. This significant milestone followed another major relocation the previous week, during which the 8.4-meter steel surrogate mirror was moved out of the observatory to make way for the glass mirror.  The Summit Safety team also played a crucial role in ensuring adherence to safety protocols and staff readiness. Despite being completed over two days, the successful execution of the mirror moves required extensive planning and preparation over several months, including the adjustment of the mirror’s support structure to fit into the observatory’s maintenance floor space. Now safely housed within the observatory, the mirror will undergo further processing, including removal from its storage box and preparation for coating in the onsite chamber. Future updates will provide insight into the mirror coating process … Read More

HPC Wire highlight: HPC in Underserved Regions: The Longest Last Mile

March 3, 2024

At NRG@SC23, we were introduced to Challenge #2: Bandwidth and Throughput, which pertained to network bandwidth and throughput. Handling large HPC problems and downloading extensive datasets from other countries posed significant challenges in this regard. Vasilka Chergarova, from the AmLight program at Florida International University, provided a comprehensive overview of how intercontinental links are managed, offering insights into the physical infrastructure underpinning our interconnected Internet world. Witnessing this connectivity firsthand was truly enlightening. It underscored the stark reality of managing network resources across vast distances. While those in developed nations often take reliable networking for granted, it’s crucial to recognize the disparities in network accessibility worldwide. While HPC clusters in the US typically operate smoothly, some research institutions and even homes in major cities have limited bandwidth, highlighting the importance of addressing these disparities … Read More
