High-Speed Data Transfers from South Africa to USA!

SC24: November 2024

The AmLight network used a hybrid network strategy that combined optical spectrum and leased capacity to build a reliable, leading-edge network infrastructure for research and education. AmLight supported high-performance network connectivity required by international science and engineering research and education collaborations involving the National Science Foundation (NSF) research community, with expansion to South America and West Africa. This collaboration offered a unique opportunity to work alongside SANReN, encompassing African involvement in the experiments while closely monitoring the performance of AmLight-ExP’s SACS link through a diverse array of experiments arranged for SC24. The aim was to demonstrate SANReN’s 100Gbps Data Transfer Nodes (DTNs), which had been implemented to assist researchers with their large data transfer needs to the US and internationally. Large data transfers to the US typically made use of AmLight-ExP’s 100G link over the SACS submarine cable system, which established a vital connection between South Africa and the United States via Brazil to Miami … Read More

Leveraging In-band Network Telemetry for Automated DDoS Detection in Production Programmable Networks: The AmLight Use Case

SC24 INDIS: November 2024

The AmLight team has successfully utilized In-band Network Telemetry (INT) technology to enhance DDoS detection in the AmLight network. By comparing INT data with sFlow, the team demonstrated that INT features can accurately identify DDoS attacks. An automated detection mechanism was then implemented, achieving real-time detection with high accuracy. Future efforts will focus on testing INT in a limited production environment to determine requirements for scaling to full network deployment. The primary goal is to enhance the system’s processing capabilities to handle high-volume traffic, paving the way for large-scale implementation in production networks. … Read More
